Raised in her parents’ Seattle clothing factory, Janelle Abbott (JRAT) developed an early respect for the labor behind every stitch. After graduating from Parsons School of Design, she rejected corporate fashion, choosing a radically sustainable, zero-waste path instead. Through her brand JRAT Zero Waste, she transforms discarded clothing and textiles into rhythmic, layered, unapologetic garments; available at boutiques from New York City to Tokyo. Biannually, JRAT debuts a new collection during NYFW, demonstrating the industry’s need to partner with creative innovators to resolve the massive pre and post-consumer waste perpetuated by the industry. Through Wardrobe Therapy, Janelle works with private clients to transform clothing they already own into new forms. She has partnered with brands like Prairie Underground and Giu Giu to rework deadstock and damaged garments into small batch collaborative collections. JRAT has fashion into the art world, exhibiting at Bumbershoot, Cannonball Arts, Slip Gallery, and the North Seattle College Gallery. Artist, designer, maker, writer, speaker, and teacher; Janelle’s work merges activism, art, and performance—a form of labor solidarity, she exposes fast fashion’s farce through garment reclamation, reminding us that all garments are human artifacts.
